Acne

What is acne?

Sebaceous glands create an oily substance called sebum. Normally sebum is expelled through pores in the skin. In acne sufferers, these pores become clogged due to overproduction of sebum caused by hormones and other factors. When these pores become clogged they become infected with bacteria, creating pimples and inflammation.

While considered most common in teenagers who are experiencing hormonal changes, people of all ages can get acne. Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and the menstrual cycle, environmental irritants, and skin care products are all common causes of acne flare-ups. Acne typically appears on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders.

Does acne occur only in teenagers?

Acne is more common in the age group of 13 - 30 years but it may occur or persist even beyond this age limit. Males are more frequently affected than females.

How is acne prevented and treated?

Most patients require a combination of therapies customized to each patient's needs, based on skin type and severity of your acne. Most patients respond well to home care regimens. The best system currently available is CLENZIderm M.D.™

Obagi's CLENZIderm M.D.™ includes a new, liquified form of benzoyl peroxide that is 1/10,000 the size of any other benzoyl peroxide available.

CLENZIderm M.D. systems™ are clinically proven to penetrate more effectively than leading prescription benzoyl peroxide products.* As a result, this preserciption strength treatment instantly penetrates the pores and begins reducing acne below the skin's surface, providing a clearer complexion in as early as 2 weeks.

Clinically proven CLENZIderm M.D.™ works quickly to clear acne. In a clinical study, patients using CLENZIderm M.D.™ Normal to Oily experienced:

  • 23% reduction in sore red acne after one week of use - twice the reduction as patients using a leading combination prescription acne medication and 52% reduction after 2 weeks.
  • 13% reduction in whiteheads and blackheads after one week of use - more than twice the reduction as patients using a leading combination prescription acne medication - and 34% reduction after 2 weeks.

Most benzoyl peroxides are formulated with insoluble crystals that remain largely on the surface of the skin. Acne, however, starts below the surface of your skin, deep within the hair follicles, or pores.
