How is an Otoplasty Performed?
During otoplasty, the folds of the ear that are readily seen from the front, are accessed from behind so that the surgical incision is made on the backside of the ear where no one will easily notice. The ear are identified and recreated by carefully placing internal stitches. Otoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia and requires a healing time of 10-14 days. To protect the surgical correction, sweatbands or beanie hats are worn during the healing period. Incision and sutures are placed behind the ear to avoid visibility. Post-operative discomfort is easily controlled with prescription pain medication.
Split or Stretched Earlobe Repair/ Earlobe Size Reduction A new technique
Split earlobes are very common and are generally due to years of wearing heavy earrings, trauma, or accidental tugging on the earlobes. The weight of the heavy earring gradually stretches the hole that finally splits open. Sudden inadvertent tugging or pulling can cause a partially stretched earlobe to tear through. This is commonly seen during hair combing or when a child pulls on the mother's earrings. The correction and repair is performed under local anesthesia or with a light sedation ("twilight sleep"). Since the earlobe is not very pain sensitive, there is minimal post-operative discomfort. Any discomfort is readily controlled with prescribed medication. Patients can usually return to work the next day. Large or elongated earlobes are an unattractive site on the ears. These deformities are either present congenitally or are the result of wearing heavy earrings. Repair and restoration of the shape and size of the earlobe is performed under local anesthesia or with a light sedation ("twilight sleep") with minimal, if any, discomfort and practically no down time.
